At Rest -Once more our community is called upon to mourn the loss of one of its most estimable young ladies. Miss Mary A. Sturm died at her home in Vine Valley, N- Y., March 20, 1897,aged 30 years, 1 month and 1 day. Though for many months Mary had been ill, and it was feared that she could not recover. When death came it found her friends unprepared for the heavy blow. She was about the house and did  her own work with the help of her father until two days before her death; and who can estimate their loss, what can compensate for the loss of a dear daughter and sister whose presence in the household had been sunshine for thirty years?  Only the Saviour of all comfort and consolation can fill the place made vacant.

She was a young woman of excellent character, a devoted Christian, exemplary in her daily walk and conversation. She was always ready to lend a helping hand to all who needed help and her constant aim was to make others happy.

She was ready to go when her Savoir called, but her only desire was to live for her father's comfort. Her death is not only a sorrow to her aged father but to her only sister and two brothers, besides many near and dear relatives and friends that are left to mourn.

The funeral was largely attended March 23 at the M. E. church conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. L. Gillard, assisted by Rev. R.W. Chamberlain, of the F. B. church; burial in Overackers (cemetery).

The remains of Mrs. Perlie Smith and her daughter, Frances, will be taken from Weiser, Idaho, and placed in the Overackers cemetery this week. Mr. Willett Hall, of Penn Yan, has been to Weiser for the bodies.

Penn Yan Democrat                  Fri                      Oct 31, 1919

The remains of Mrs. Perlie Smith and daughter, Frances,  were brought to the Overackers cemetery, Tuesday of last week by two hearses operated by Messrs. Dugan and Schmoker, of Penn Yan. They were accompanied by the Willett Hall family, and Rev. L. S. Boyd, of Penn Yan, who made a short prayer at the grave. The caskets were  placed in one grave in a beautiful spot, near the highway, over-looking Mrs. Smith's old home, where she spent most of her life; the daughter was also born there.  The incident calls to mind the words of the negro poet, Paul Lawrence Dunbar:

"Let me settle when my shoulders drop their load, So I can hear the noises from the road, It will suit my spirits best, When I take my last long rest, To be among the things I loved the best."

FORMER SHORTSVILLE RESIDENT DIES IN CANANDAIGUA -

Charles Speers of Canandaigua, a resident of Shortsville for several years, died at his home in that city last Wednesday afternoon, after an extended illness. He was in his 78th year.

Mr. Speers was born at Springwater, on May 21, 1864, a son of the late John and Eliza Westbrook Speers. He had served as baggage agent at the New York Central depot in Canandaigua for 29 years, and had been on the retired list for 12 years. His wife, the former Miss Olive Rice of Springwater, died a number of years ago.

The survivors are four daughters and two sons, Mrs. William Dewey of Rushville, Mrs. Chrisman, Mrs. Alfred Clark, Mrs. Daisy Zimmerman, Warren and Ray Speers, all of Canandaigua; two brothers, Emory Speers of North Greece and William Speers of Canandaigua; also a large number of grand children and great-grandchildren.

Obsequies were held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Chrisman at 2:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon and the remains were laid at rest in Overackers' Cemetery.

The death of Mr. Speers brings to mind his defense in the writer's behalf when we were only a young lad. We had spent a Saturday husking corn for a farmer who lived near the village. Our compensation amounted to thirty cents for the day's effort. The pay was small, and the weather that day was cold. Unaccustomed as we were to farm labors, we worked hard at the appointed task. When pay-day came, with us the farmer refused to settle up and to this day we still have the thirty cents coming.  However, we are sure that if were to dun the farmer again for the money we would have to get permission from his Satanic Majesty.

One day when the farmer and Charley Speers happened to visit the office at the same time, we asked the farmer again for our pay. He grew angry and he threatened to beat us up. It was then that Charley took a hand and advised the farmer that to carry out his threat, he would have to walk over Speers' body, which would have been a considerable job, for Charley was not only a big man, but a mighty powerful one as well.  Hence our underlying memory of Charley Speers.
