Prattsburgh News                               Thursday             April 24, 1902                            by Dianne Thomas

George Andrus Everett was born February 11, 1878, in Elsworth, Iowa, and died with quick consumption,  March 18th, 1902. An orphan, his parents dying in Iowa, when he was a child, he was brought from Iowa to New York state when he was six years old, by his aunt, Miss Belle Andrus.

His uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Windnagle, who live in the town of Prattsburg, Steuben county, took this homeless boy into their home and hearts as one of their own. He was one of the best of boys, manly, studious motives good, pure in thought and deed. He was converted when 17 years of age and joined the Free Methodist church and lived a consistent Christian life.  The deceased graduated with honors from Keuka College when he was 19 years of age, won the scholarship for Schenectady, and started on his college course, but the over-worked brain became confused, and he came home,  insane. He had ambition to be a college professor.  We all regret his lack of strength to reach his high ideal.

He partly recovered from the first attack of Insanity, went to Iowa, stayed nearly one year, came back to his home in Prattsburgh, was taken ill, and was taken to Willard State Hospital and remained there until death.

The funeral services were held in the M.E. church, at Italy Hill, Thursday, March 20, the Rev. Arthur Osborne officiating, taking for his text Heb. 11: 10 - " For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God." The text and excellent sermon was very appropriate for one that lived so well. The funeral was largely attended. Interment in Italy Hill cemetery.

The Prattsburg News             Thursday              October 22, 1903                 by Dianne Thomas

MRS. WILLIAM E. SMITH Chloe Ann Foster was born in June 1890 in Syracuse, N.Y., where her father was one of the earliest business men to embark in the salt Industry which has since made Syracuse famous and many men rich, At the age of a few months past sixteen years she married William E. Smith, who left her side and all earthly scenes and entered into his rest December 9,1902, and whose obituary appeared in these columns in the issue of December 11th of that year. Mrs. Smith was the mother of four children, one, the only son, Edward, died at the age of seven years, in 1849  and was burled in the Bardeen cemetery, and whose remains have at the request of the father, and in execution of one of the trusts imposed upon his youngest daughter, Helen M, Ellsworth by deed, been by her removed and placed in her lot in the Italy Hill cemetery, and now rests beside his father and mother in one of the choicest lots, in this most beautiful arid veil kept country cemetery.

Mrs. Smith was a very great sufferer for years being afflicted with dropsical troubles, and soon after the death of her husband by cancerous afflictions, heart troubles, and her mind was terribly troubled by litigation, forced upon her (as she herself said) thru ingratitude and inordinate envy and vindictiveness, from a source whence was due her all love and sympathy.

Her above named daughter Mrs. Helen M. Ellsworth, who cared for her father so long during his last illness and managed his business matters to his entire satisfaction, continued to care for her mother in the same way, and was appointed by the Surrogate as co-administrator with her mother of her father's estate. The mother having been left a life estate in it all. Some months since, it became necessary that she, Mrs. Ellsworth should be with her mother almost constantly, and her home being at Italy Hill where her husband's business demanded his constant attendance, it became necessary for her to remove her mother to her own home, which she did, and where, with the help of two assistants most of the time, Mrs. Ellsworth managed her own home and cared for her mother night and day, until she was released from all her woes and joined those gone before at 8 o'clock on the evening of September 27,1903.

The funeral was held in the M, E. church at Italy Hill after a prayer by the Rev. J. Knapp and a hymn by the choir, at the house. It was the wish of the deceased that her late pastor, as well as consulting physician, the Rev. Dr. Arthur Osborne should preach her "funeral sermon" but it was found impossible to procure his attendance, after repeated telephone and telegraph messages, he being at conference.

Mr. Joseph O. McConnell, the Prattsburgh undertaker (who the writer understands is a relative of the departed), assisted Mrs. Ellsworth in securing finally, an old Christian fellow soldier of William E. Smith and his wife both an old and valued friend of fifty years and more. The Rev. John Knapp, who said he could not and should not preach a sermon, then announced a text, "For to live is Christ, but to die is Gain," and delivered one of the most appropriate, effective and sympathetic discourses the writer ever listened to.

The aged brother and comrade himself, fast nearing his "last camp" before answering his last roll call" and his physical eyes so dim, that he was obliged to ask Brother McConnell, the most kind and efficient undertaker to read a chapter in the Bible from which the text was taken. The sister of William E. Smith, Mrs. Olive Cornish, who has just waded through the deep waters of affliction having seen her son, William Cornish and his wife pass,  beyond the flood, following her husband, was present and remarked on the choice lot in the cemetery and the extreme comfort of the discourse and every appointment of the last sad yet comforting obituary services.

The Prattsburg News             Thursday              September 28, 1905                 by Dianne Thomas

Hugh Chriscaden -  The subject of this sketch was born in the town of Jerusalem, Yates Co., N.Y., on February 17, 1833, and died at his residence in the town of Prattsburgh, Sunday, Sept. 17, 1905.

In the year 1861 he enlisted in the war of the Rebellion, served his country three years and received an honorable discharge; after which he re-enlisted and served for six months. His father was also a soldier in this war, together with five other boys. Since the war, most of his life has been spent in the vicinity of Italy Hill and Prattsburgh.

After his return from the army he married Caroline Turner,  who died several years ago. He again married Elizabeth Cook, who survives him; also one son, John Chriscaden, who is married and lives at Italy Hill.

Few families can boast of as patriotic a record, that of a father and six sons serving in the army at one time, four of whom are still living. There were also three girls in the family. He  was a member of Co. A, 1st New York Engineers and at the time of his death was a member of Gregory Post G.A.R. of Prattsburgh, a number of whom attended his funeral on Tuesday, Sept. 10, which was held in the Methodist church, at Italy Hill  Rev. E . G. Evans officiating. Burial in Italy Hill cemetery.

Mr. Chriscaden had been an invalid for several years, having had several apoplectic strokes. Thus the old veterans of the war are dropping away, going to that home from which no Wanderer returns.

The Prattsburg News             Thursday                           Feb  16, 1911                by Dianne Thomas

GAR RESOLUTIONS - Again has the Death Angel entered our ranks and removed from our already depicted numbers comrade James Chriscaden whose death occurred at the N. Y, S. & S. Home at Bath, Sunday, Jan. 22, 1911.  By the removal of Comrade Chriscaden, Gregory Post 010, Prattsburgh, N.Y., laments the loss of a faithful, loyal and sympathetic member.

The remains wore brought from the home to thin village, where the obsequies were observed and interment was in  Italy Hill cemetery,

Comrade Chriscaden was one of seven unusually patriotic and loyal brother, six of whom, together with their father, and one  in-law, responded to their country's call in time of need, went forth to battle for freedom and the defense of the 'stars and stripes' .

Two of the brothers and the brother in-law law still survive, the father and four brothers having answered to the last roll call of the "Supreme Commander".

Resolved, therefore, that the official chair of our late comrade be draped in mourning for thirty days, that these minutes be published in The Prattsburg News and a copy thereof be mailed to the bereaved daughter at Saginaw, Mich.
