LOCALS - After living to within two years of the century mark, Mrs. Elizabeth Whyatt died in Bellona, September 23, 1901. She was born in England in 1803.

Elmira Daily Gazette        Friday              September 27, 1901   by Dianne Thomas

ELIZABETH WHYATT, DEAD - AN OLD LADY WELL REMEMBERED BY ELMIRANS -  There was committed to the earth last Tuesday afternoon in Balona, N.Y.,  [s/b Bellona...] the body of Mrs. Elizabeth Whyatt, who had passed in this life 98 years, four months and sixteen days. Her demise occurred Monday morning and is of interest in Elmira on account of Mrs. Whyatt's former residence here during the days of the civil war.

There are many in Elmira who recall her. At the outbreak of the civil strife "Aunty" Whyatt, as she was familiarly known, kept a restaurant on East Water street and later was landlady at the old Patterson house. Many old citizens well remember the welcome and cordial greetings they received from the dear old lady.

Until recently Mrs. Whyatt  had been living with Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Fitz Simmons on Maple avenue, but it was her wish to die at Bellona, Yates county, where her nephew. William Plattman  lives and where relatives and friends are lying in the old cemetery.

Mrs. Whyatt was born in England. She was left a widow early in life and came to this country sometime in the early fifties.  She came to Elmira from Geneva with George Archer, a nephew,  who accompanied her from England with her two daughters, Anna and Hattie.  She had one brother, Joseph Plattman who came to this country in 1836 and settled in Benton, Yates county, N.Y. He died in 1891.

Mrs. Whyatt was a good woman, having connection with the Methodist Episcopal church. She died as she had lived - in peace.
