Amos G. West - Government Marker Will Be Placed on Soldier's Grave -

PENN YAN Revolutionary War soldiers are on the rolls of the Penn Yan Chapter 100,Royal Arch Masons, one of the few organizations in Yates County which can make such a boast.

Amos G West, a Corporal, buried in Lakeview Cemetery is one of these.  For many years he was listed as having served in the War of 1812, but the National Archives records have revealed that he is a Revolutionary Wars soldier.

West, evidently received his Chapter degrees at Geneva or another chapter. He joined the Penn Yan Chapter as an affiliated member. The broken stone on his grave is to be changed in the near future to a government grave marker, secured through the efforts of the Legion Graves Registration Committee.

David Wagener father of Penn Yans founders

By GERALD M. DYKEM - PENN YAN -There is a marker beneath an Oak tree in the old section of Lakeview Cemetery that has inscribed on it, "David Wagener - died 1799. The first person to be buried in this cemetery."

David Wagener was not only the first person to be buried in what is now known as Lakeview Cemetery, but gave it to the village officials of Penn Yan to be used as a public burial ground. And it is still under the jurisdiction of the village government.  David Wagener was born near Worcester, Pa. and grew up in the Schwenkfelder faith of his parents. He later joined the Methodists when he married Rebecca Supplee, a sister of a Methodist minister. Wagener, however, was not satisfied with his religious faith and was about to join the Quakers when he met Jemima Wilkinson, the Public Universal Friend.

He became so impressed with the influence that Jemima Wilkinson seemed to have over her followers that he allowed her the use of his home each time she came to Worcester.  And although it has been said by Yates County historians that he did not actually become one of her followers, Wagener sold his farming interests in Pennsylvania and came to this area in 1791, one year after Jemima Wilkinson had settled in the town of Torrey near Dresden.

This was about the time there became a dispute over the Pre-emption line which also involved the land occupied by Jemima Wilkinson. When she decided to move to the area now known as Jerusalem, Wagener purchased the grist mill that he been built on the original site. He later sold it and in1796 had the opportunity to purchase land that is now the site of Penn Yan. And he built the first grist mill which was located on the south side of the Keuka Lake Outlet at the present site of the Main St. bridge.

D.A. investigating death of Penn Yan nursing home patient - By Maurice Dumas - Penn Yan - An investigation is being conducted by District Attorney Dan TAYLOR, into the death of a patient at the Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home. The patient, Helen FEAGLES, 52, who was mentally retarded, died Sunday. "Because of the unusual circumstances in her death and in the cause of death, it is being investigated to see if there was any criminal negligence in her treatment", say TAYLOR.  The investigation, he said, will determine if a grand jury investigation is warranted.

TAYLOR said he became involved with the case upon receiving notification from medical authorities that the cause of death was out of the ordinary. He said the patient was undergoing medical treatment and that improper administration of the treatment, may have caused her death.  The district attorney would not comment on the type of medical treatment.

An autopsy performed Monday, by Coroner, Dr. James BENEDICT, revealed the cause of death, to be septicernia, an infection commonly known as blood poisoning.  Noreen CURTIS, nursing home administrator, was not available for comment this morning because she was in conference.  Two nursing home employees have been suspended without pay while the investigation is being conducted.  The employees were not identified.  Joining TAYLOR in the investigation are the Office of the Deputy Attorney General for Medicaid Fraud and Control in Rochester, and Penn Yan police.

A spokesman for the office in Rochester explained that the agency routinely gets involved in cases where there is a question about a patient's death.  The spokesman says his offices involvement does not mean that the agency is looking into the possibility of fraud at the nursing home.

Miss FEAGLES was a long time patient at the nursing home, which was established 10 years ago.  Her funeral was held Wednesday and burial was in the Lakeview cemetery.

Penn Yan, N.Y.  -  Edwin WORDEN of Keuka Lake died November 4, 2011.  Friends and family wishing to pay their respects can do so at the American Legion in Penn Yan from two to four p.m. on Sunday Nov. 20, 2011.

Edwin was born Sept. 13, 1922, the son of Kenneth and Ella Louise Worden. Edwin was one of four brothers Donald, Francis, and Miles Worden. He graduated from Penn Yan Academy in 1940 and returned there for a graduate program in 1941.

Throughout high school he avidly participated in basketball, track and field, but his best sport was football and he went on to attend Colgate college on a football scholarship. Edwin's enrollment at Colgate was cut short after one semester 1941 was the year of Pearl Harbor. Edwin was compelled to join the fight and entered the United States Army Air Corps, being called to active duty in 1942. He received his pilot's wings in 1943 and was stationed at a base near London. Edwin flew 67 active combat missions, mostly over France and Germany. He flew the B-26 Martin Marauder on D-day over Normandy. That day they were ordered to fly low under the clouds and to bomb with a one minute window before soldiers hit the beach. The beach he was assigned to bomb had one of the lowest number of casualties. In 1944 he returned to the U.S. and was stationed in Savannah, Ga., where as a pilot, he tested 27 different types of aircraft. Edwin was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of captain. He had been decorated with the Air Medal.

During his enlistment, Edwin married his high school sweetheart, Suzanne Jolly.   She was the love of his life, and he was unbelievably grateful for her. Edwin and Suzanne had two sons, Michael and Steven Worden. Steven, Michael and Suzanne all passed away before Edwin, one of his greatest sorrows.

Upon his discharge, he returned to Penn Yan, where he took over Suzanne's father's car dealership, Jolley Chevrolet. Edwin was an honest and innovative businessman. He pioneered a system for leasing cars that had not been seen yet, a system that was adopted by Chevrolet and their dealerships. Edwin owned and operated Jolley's for 30 years, using his business as a platform to get involved the community, joining the Yates County Planning Board and helping originate Yates County Tomorrow. Yates County Tomorrow focused mostly on economic development in Yates County.

Edwin was a lover of nature and in his youth he enjoyed hiking, sailing, ice boating, and all things Keuka Lake. He enjoyed his birds at their feeders, his plants, and his beautiful home on Keuka Lake. He was able to stay home until the end of his life. This was important for him and was made possible by his devoted caretakers, family, and friends.

Edwin is survived by his grandchildren, Katy and Jesse Worden; his daughter-in-law, Susan Worden; his brother, Miles Mariner Worden, cousins, nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

We will always remember Edwin as an honest thoughtful man. He was generous and cared about the people and the place that he was from. The life he led was beyond interesting and he did not take his experiences for granted. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and friend. He was a humble gentleman, and he will be missed.

Jerusalem, N.Y. - Jerusalem History Club members met at the Beddoe-Rose Cemetery in Keuka Lake State Park Sunday, Nov. 13 for a cleanup project.  Don Wright, chairperson for the JHC Cemetery Committee had collected and sent in the volunteer slips to the state asking for permission to work on a cleanup of this neglected family cemetery.

Jim Zimpher of Keuka Lake State Park, Bob Evans, Town of Jerusalem Historian, and Fred and Heather Tillman, family descendants of the Rose Family, had attended the August JHC meeting at the Branchport Library to discuss plans to take care of the overgrown and vandalized site.

After receiving an insurance waiver, a group of seven volunteers spent three hours clearing rotten trees, saplings, undergrowth and leaves from the cemetery.  This is the first step in the plan to show the community cares about this historical Jerusalem site.

Beginning with the first burial in 1815, 14 souls are buried here, including two granddaughters of Philip Livingston, who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
An educational brochure is being made to list the names of those buried here from the
Beddoe, Rose and Sill families, to show photos of their homes, and to tell a brief history of settlement.

The project should be completed by spring 2012 with a sign being made by the state park to identify this historical site.

Keith Toaspern has made a box to go on the sign which will contain the informational brochure and a notebook for visitors to sign and/ or make comments.  Local school groups visit the cemetery, making this information box an education site for the community.

The Jerusalem History Clubs goal is to preserve Jerusalem History.  Anyone interested in joining the group can look for the groups monthly notice in this newspaper, look for flyers at local Jerusalem sites or call 315-536-9887 to get on the email list.
