Acting upon the report of the proper appraiser, the surrogate has fixed the collateral inheritance tax upon the estate of Mrs. Mary DAKIN, late of Himrod, at the sum of $200.13.

Himrod, Scene of Serious Freight Wreck on Central Railroad.
 
A serious freight wreck occurred on the New York Central railroad at Himrod at 2 o'clock yesterday morning. Though there were no fatalities, the damage inflicted on the cars made it of considerable immediate importance to the wrecking crew.
It was what is known as a rear-end collision, in railway  parlance. One train was waiting at the station for orders when another heavy train of freight cars crashed into the caboose. The engine was badly damaged and fifteen cars thrown from the track.  The tracks were strewn with wreckage and it took practically the entire day to clear them. There is a high embankment near the station and some of the cars were knocked over it.
The engineer of the train which was wrecked  claimed that the air brakes would not work. Every member of the train crews is  congratulating himself on the miraculous escape. The damage to the railroad  property will amount to a large sum.

SUDDEN DEATH AT MILO - Penn Yan, June 28 - James R. RAZEY, of Milo, aged 77 years, died suddenly of heart disease at 6 o'clock last night. He was apparently as well as ever up to that time, and was seated in a chair when he was seized with the attack and  died at once.

BARNES - POST  -  Penn Yan, June 29 -Miss Margaret Alice BARNES, of Barnesboro, Pa., and Arthur Abram POST, of Havana, Cuba, son of the late Frank POST, of this village,  were married yesterday at the home of the bride in Barnesboro, Pa.  Mr. and Mrs.  POST will spend some time in Penn Yan before sailing for Havana, Cuba, where Mr.  POST is the private secretary of the president of the Havana Electric Railway Company.

 Deaths :  MRS. E. J. BLAND, of Himrod, whose death occurred Tuesday night, October 8^th, was buried in Lakeview, Friday last, Rev. DeWitt S. HOOKER officiating. She leaves four sons and three daughters: George DALLAS of Franklinville, N. Y., Othar DALLAS of Buffalo, William DALLAS of Jersey City, N. J., Frank DALLAS of Penn Yan, Mrs. C. V. STOCKER of Jersey City, N. J., Mrs. Ruth WIGDEN of Himrod, and Mrs. M. G. PETERS of Penn Yan.

PHILBROOK - Entered into rest, January 3, 1922,Mrs.Helen Francis PHILBROOK at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Grant CUSHMAN., No. 81 Athemarle street. Funeral services at the residence Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment later in Lake View cemetery, PennYan, N.Y.

GORDON - Lee Whitney GORDON, died Saturday evening, December 31, 1921 at his home, No 251 Edinburgh street. He leaves four daughters, Mrs. Catherine COLVIN and Mrs. Ella CLARK of this city and Mrs. Margaret ROGERS and Mrs. Elizabeth HOLAN of Penn Yan; two brothers, John GORDON of Winslow, Ill and William GORDON of Tully and twelve grandchildren. The funeral was held on Tuesday morning at 8:45o'clock from the home and 9 o'clock at the Immaculate Conception Church. Interment was made at Penn Yan, N.Y.

• Mrs. F. E. VAIL and Miss Alma HUNTER left Thursday for a motor trip to the Thousand Islands and Massena, where they will visit Mr. and Mrs. Arthur VAIL, returning home through the Adirondacks.  

• Mr. and Mrs. Wallace WOODLAWN of Buffalo, were callers Wednesday of Mrs. Myra JOHNSON.

• Mr. and Mrs. Stacy BASSAGE and Mr. and Mrs. Edward ADAMS spent Friday with Mr. and Mrs. James CORWIN, in Elmira. 

• Mr. and Mrs. Harry TIFFANY of Tarrytown, NJ, were in town over Sunday.  They brought back Arolene BROWN of Pultney, who had been spending ten days at the TIFFANY home. 

• Mrs. Minnie LEWIS and daughter, Miss Jessie LEWIS, are spending a few days with her daughter, Mrs. Gifford HURLBUT at Watkins Glen.

• E. E. WOODHOUSE spend Sunday with his children at the head of the lake, where they are camping.

• Mrs. Ida COONS of Naples is spending a week with Mr. and Mrs. William HALSTED.

• Rev. George WINKWORTH of North Rose, was a dinner guest Tuesday, of Mrs. Lyman DONALDSON & called on several friends in town.

• Mrs. Glen SWARTHOUT had the misfortune while washing last week, to catch her left hand in the wringer, badly bruising her hand and breaking a bone in her forefinger. 

• Lauren BURTCH who has been ill the past few weeks, is better and his many friends will be glad to see him out again.

• Miss Kathryn SMITH of RBI, Rochester, and Miss PERRY spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George SMITH.

SMITH attended the movie, " The White Angel" at the Babcock Theatre, Bath, Monday, after which Bertha STURDEVANT took the party for a long ride.  In Hammondsport they had a picnic supper, then up the east side of the lake the entire length, stopping at Red Jacket Park, then on to Penn Yan and back to Prattsburg, by way of Branchport.  The trip was much enjoyed by all.

• Mrs. Avery MOREHOUSE accompanied Mr. and Mrs. John HOLDEN, of Penn Yan, to Elmira, Monday, to see Mrs. Hazel Morehouse LeFEVER, who is critically ill, following an appendectomy performed Saturday.

• Mrs. George HEATH has been caring for her sister, Mrs. George ATAWES for the past two weeks, who has been very ill of asthma.

Mays Mills

• Mr. and Mrs. Harold PREUSS and little daughter, Leah, and Mr. and Mrs. Duane SCHOFIELD, of Lansing, Michigan, spent last week with relatives and friends here and in Penn Yan. 

• Mrs. Julia VASS, of New York City, is spending several weeks with her niece, Mrs. Josephine ORSLEY.

• Mrs. Blanche RIBBLE was in Penn Yan, Saturday, on business.

• Carlton and Glendon TIERNEY have gone on a 2 weeks vacation and Stephen CAREY of Penn Yan, accompanied them.  They expect to visit New York and also take a trip through the mountains and then onto Washington, DC,  "to shake hands with President ROOSEVELT, our next President for the coming four years."

• Mrs. Julia PERRY is having some trouble with her eyes.  Dr. TOWNSEND is giving her treatment.

• Ernest RIBBLE and Dennis CUNNINGHAM were dinner guests at the home of Alvah ROGERS on Bluff Point, Sunday.

• Albert MILLER is moving his barns.  

• Mrs. Jacob V. EGELSTON, of Woodstock, Ill, and Mrs. Iva HAUSE, of Rochester, visited Mr. and Mrs. C. M. EGELSTON, Wednesday.

• Frank SCHULTZ of Himrod, visited his cousin, C. W. EGELSTON, on the Sabbath. 

• We are glad to report that Mrs. W. A. POTTS, who has been critically ill for several weeks, has recovered sufficiently so that her daughter, Mrs. George LEHR has returned to her home in Buffalo.

• Mrs. Minnie EVANS of Sayre, Pa., has been spending a week with her sister, Mrs. W. O. POTTS. Lewis POTTS and family have also been visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. O. POTTS.

• John CROUCH lost his false teeth recently, while cleaning the backyard.  After diligent search by several neighbors, the teeth were found under a brush pile. John has decided his mouth is a safer place than his shirt pocket, for his teeth. 

Dresden

• The many friends of John KILPATRICK, of Weiser, Idaho, will regret to hear that he is very ill at his home there, having undergone a critical operation at the hospital.  John is well known here having lived at the old KILPATRICK home at North Torrey many years.

• Mrs. Mary RYAN and son, Wendell, leave Wednesday with their cousins Mr. and Mrs. Will TAYLOR of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.,  for a drive through the Eastern States.  They expect to be gone one week.  

• Mr. and Mrs. H. W. MITTOWER, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. RYAL attended the Chapin school reunion held at Holcomb on Saturday last.  There were more than one hundred present.  An entertainment was given in the school house.  After a bountiful dinner was served at 1:30, the officers were elected for another year.

• Chester CARSON and family entertained company over the weekend.

• Mr. and Mrs. Archie BAILEY were at their cottage for the weekend.

• Richard LAZALERE and Wendall MITTOWER were at Canandaigua, Sunday afternoon. 

• Mrs. Myron KEEFER and son William, spent Monday at Lyons.

• Miss KRAMER of Rochester is the guest of Mrs. A. SHONES. 

• George LOTZER of Rochester, is visiting his sister, Mrs. Delazon LUDLOW.

• CARROLL and KEAVENY, of Gorham, have been procured to wire the parsonage.  The work is to be done in the next few days.  

• Mr. and Mrs. Joseph TIERNEY of Mays Mills, were dinner guests at the Methodist Parsonage, Thursday.

• Mr. and Mrs. TUNBRIDGE, Mrs. Herman SMITH, Mrs. Edward FERGUSON, Clyde BUGBEE, all of Canandaigua, were Sunday callers at the parsonage and were present at the morning worship service. 

• Rev. William BARNES of Thomas Indian School, called on his mother, Mrs. Helen BARNES, recently.  He brought with him two Indian boys.

• Mr. and Mrs. Wesley TURNER of Shortsville, and Mr. and Mrs. Ted ANDERSON of Albion, were Sunday guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willard TURNER.

• Mr. and Mrs. JOHNSTON of Chicago, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. L. E. NEWLANDER.  

• The LONG reunion will be held Saturday, Aug 9, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ashley LONG.

• Mr. Samuel PLATMAN has returned to his home after spending 2 weeks at Geneva Nursing Home.

• Mrs. Margaret ANABEL, who was 80 years of age, Wednesday, July 29th, is very active, being able to walk the distance of a mile to her daughter's, Mrs. Melvin DONLEY, and back, the same day.  

• Mr. and Mrs.. Maynard HORTON, Mr. and Mrs. Dudley VOORHEES of Rushville, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. John KENNEDY.

• Collins ANABLE who worked for Thomas JOHNSON, near Rushville, has returned home.

• The house of Margaret RANDOLPH was burned to the ground Saturday evening, seemingly having been caused by careless smokers, having caught fire from dry grass by the roadside. 

• Dewey DONLEY and family recently moved from Margaret RANDOLPH's to Joseph KRAPE's house on Rhine street, Naples. 

• Mr. and Mrs. Orla JOHNSON, Howard JOHNSON spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. William SCHAEFFER, near Canandaigua.  

• Charles SHAY, wife and daughter, Barbara, of Rochester, were here for the weekend at their farm. 

• There were 80 present at the BRINK & CONLEY reunion held Saturday with Mrs. Sarah RANDOLPH.  The 1937 reunion will be held with Mrs. Mary BRINK at Allen's Hill. 

• Mr. and Mrs. Thomas JOHNSON and son Gordon, William JOHNSON, Rushville were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Earl RANDOLPH and Gordon remained for the week and Clifford returned home.

• Paul SPIKE of Rochester spent several days with his cousin Mrs. Sarah RANDOLPH, Mrs. Harold STONE and Dwight COLEMAN of Seneca Falls, were Sunday visitors of Mrs. RANDOLPH.

• Dr. Arthur PARKER of Rochester, is enjoying his vacation here with his family.

• Miss Ruth BAY is visiting two weeks at the home of her aunt, Mrs. James FARR, at White Hall, Pa.

• Miss Elona UNDERWOOD of Francisco, Calif., spent part of the week with her niece, Mrs. May HORTON. Miss UNDERWOOD expects to return to California the middle of the month.

• M. S. BRUSCH spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Stephen PULLAR of Gibson Hill. 

• Miss Lizzie SCOTCHMER of South Pulteney, entertained eight couples at a Halloween party, Friday evening, Oct 30.

• Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur BENNETT were recent guests of their grandmother, Mrs. Sarah BONNEY.

• Mrs. Lloyd NORTON entertained the bridge club at luncheon, last Friday.

• Mrs. Jack BRADLEY and son John, visited Mr. and Mrs. Henry GLADUE, last weekend.  Mr. BRADLEY came Sunday and returned to Bolivar with his family, Sunday evening.  Mrs. BRADLEY, while here, attended the mother's and daughter's banquet, which was held at the Presbyterian church parlors Saturday evening, Oct. 24.  The girls and their teacher, Mrs. GLADUE, presented a varied program.  The Westminster Guild served a splendid supper and Helen MINERLY was the perfect toastmistress.  

• Miss Sylvia WILCOX visited Miss Lydia MOON of Branchport, last Thursday.  

• Rev and Mrs. A. B. SCHOFIELD spent a couple of days with friends in Owego.

E. W. Chapin, of Second Milo Baptist Church, officiating. Burial in Lake View.

Mrs. Erva B. PETERSON - Penn Yan - Mrs. Erva B. PETERSON, 84 of 171 Main St., died Saturday at Soldiers and Sailors hospital.  Funeral services were today at 4 pm at the Weldon Funeral Home with the Rev. Lee HOWE, officiating.  Burial was in the 2nd Milo Cemetery.  Mrs. PETERSEN was a life resident of Penn Yan and was a member of Second Milo Baptist Church.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart Fund at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital  Surviving are two sons, Carl J. and Robert C., both of Penn Yan; two sisters, Mrs. Vera PETERSON of Dundee and Mrs. Helen BROUWERE of Altay; 12 grandchildren; two great grand children; and several nieces and nephews.

TOMES, Letta B. - Letta Bornheimer TOMES, 80, of Palmyra died Monday, October5, 1998 at the Clifton Springs Nursing Home. Mrs. TOMES was born the daughter of Albert and Jinnive Smith BORNHEIMER, December 26, 1917 in Clifton Springs. She retired from Garlock in Palmyra. Mrs. TOMES was a member of the Rebekah and the United Methodist Church of Palmyra. Interment in the Lakeview Cemetery, Penn Yan. Mrs. TOMES is survived by her sons, Thomas (Rose) TOMES of Macedon, Charles (Zelma) TOMES, Sr. of Clifton Springs and Richard (Roberta) TOMES of Palmyra; daughter, Linda (Larry) DeCLERCK of Newark; granddaughters Dawn DAVIS  and Tracy TOMES; grandsons, Mark (Annette) TOMES and Charles (Pam) TOMES Jr.; four great-granddaughters; sister, Iva KENT of Palmyra and nephew Ronald KENT.   Mrs. TOMES was predeceased by her husband Albert TOMES in 1992.

McMAHON Donald R. - Donald R. "Fuzzy" McMAHON 73, of Keuka Park, died Jan. 28, 1999, at his home. Mr. McMAHON was born June 18, 1925 in Geneva, the son of Thomas G. and Reitha Marlow McMAHON. He served with the Fifth Armored Division of the U.S. Army during World War II.   A postmaster for 23 years, he worked at the Dresden Post Office, the Branchport Post Office, and retired in1986 from the Marion Post Office. He was a communicant of St. Michael's Church, and a life member of the Dresden Fire Dept. He also belonged to the National Association of Postmasters, Penn Yan VFW and the Dresden American Legion. 

Interment in St. Michael's Cemetery, Penn Yan. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy R. McMAHON; two sons, James M. (Bonna) McMAHON of Dresden and Donald Andrew of Farmington; one daughter, Mrs. (Peter) Nancy BREVET of Newark; grandsons, Matthew BREVET and Kevin McMAHON; two brothers, Thomas (Charlotte) McMAHON of Oneonta, Robert (Naomi) McMAHON of Palmetto, FL; several nieces and nephews.

THAXTON, Harold - Harold THAXTON Jr., 55, of Newark/Williamson, died suddenly Tuesday, October 9, 2001 at Strong Memorial Hospital. Harold was born August 11, 1946 to Harold and Ethel Masatwski THAXTON in Dayton, Kentucky. He loved football and watching old John Wayne movies. Harold is survived by his brothers, Paul Thomas of Bergen and Ronald Thomas of Dundee; and friends at the Finger Lakes DDSO. Harold was predeceased by his mother Ethel HOLLENBECK and step-father Ralph HOLLENBECK. Interment at Hillside Cemetery in Dundee.

PULVER Dr. Donald - Dr. Donald W. PULVER Sr., 91, who served the Phelps area for 37 years, died December 13, 2003 at Clifton Springs Hospital. He was born in1912, the youngest son of Irwin and Anna PULVER. He graduated from Cornell Veterinary School in 1935. In 1939 he married Doris M. DOOLITTLE and established his large and small animal veterinary practice in Phelps. He retired in 1976. Dr. PULVER was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Phelps Rotary Club and the Garoga Sincerity F&AM Lodge 200. He is survived by his children, Dr. Robert I. (Joan) PULVER of Penfield, William E. (Patricia) PULVER of Irondequoit, Dr. Donald W. Jr. (Robin) PULVER of Pittsford and Carolyn A. (Brian) BURKE of Webster; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased in 2001 by his wife, Doris. Private interment in Lakeview Cemetery in Penn Yan.

 VERSTREATE, Louise - Louise VERSTREATE, 85, died November 1, 2003 at Newark Manor Nursing Home. Louise was born October 20, 1919 in Pulteney, to Ernest and Lillian Eldred Smith. Louise is survived by many friends at Newark Manor. Arrangements by Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street.  Funeral services were officiated by the Rev. SKINKLE, Grace - Grace P. SKINKLE, 78, of Lyons, died Feb. 25, 2004 at home. Grace was born in Youngstown, Ohio, to Conrad and Ilie Mae Hawkins EDDWARDS. She retired from Parker Hannifin in Clyde and was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a life member of the Lyons Rod and Gun Club, an avid reader, and golfer at the Wayne Hills Country Club. She is survived by her son, Richard (Denise) of Palmyra; two daughters, Barbara (Jack) WHITE of Clyde, and Wendy (Nelson) WHITCOMB of Palmyra; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in 1996 by her husband, Clifford W. SKINKLE, and by a sister, Virginia HARTMAN. Inurnment will be in Lake View Cemetery in Penn Yan.

Stock, George - George T. Stock, 57, of Rushville, died January 19, 2004 at his home on South Main Street. Friends are invited to call from 10 to 11 on Saturday, January 24 at the United Methodist Church, 22 N. Main Street, Rushville, where funeral services will follow at 11. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Dundee. 

George was born in Potter, Pennsylvania on August 3, 1946, the son of Francis and Ethel Badmone Stock. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. George is survived by many friends and a cousin, Freida Badmone of Dundee.
