Penn Yan Democrat Friday May 30, 1919 by: Dianne Thomas
O'NEIL - In Penn Yan, May 26, 1919, John O'Neil, aged 79 years. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Josiah Tubbs, who lived with him, on Brown street; and a granddaughter.
Mr. O'Neil had lived in Penn Yan practically all of his life. He served three years in the Civil War in Co. C, 44th Reg. This company was originally raised for the 148th Reg., but the latter being filled up, it was attached to the 44th. Mr. O'Neil was a rural mail carrier from Penn Yan when the rural routes were first established he served two terms as village street commissioner. For the last few years he had been unable to get about except on crutches, on account of rheumatism.
The funeral was held Wednesday morning at St. Michael's church. The body was placed in the vault in Lake View cemetery, because the grave which had been dug in St. Michael's cemetery filled with water.
