Penn Yan, Dec. 12 - James Hoban, aged 58 years, died at the Memorial Hospital at Canandaigua late Wednesday afternoon from injuries received when he accidentally fell from the high ....over the outlet of Lake Keuka day or so ago. Surviving are his wife and daughter, Anna, both of Penn Yan; three sons, John of Penn Yan, Bernard, of Camp Dix, and Frank in service over in France; his mother, Mrs. Catherine Hoban,  three brothers, Owen and John, of Penn Yan; and Patrick, of Naples; and three sisters, Mrs. William Tierrfey, Mrs. Mary Flaherty, and Alice, all of Penn Yan. Elmira, NY Morning Telegram  Sunday     December 15, 1918      by Dianne Thomas

James Hoban, who owns and has conducted a meat market in Jacob street, while walking across the Pennsylvania railroad bridge over the Lake Keuka outlet, fell a distance of fifty feet, striking the ground just to the north side of the New York Central track where it runs under the Pennsylvania bridge. Two men saw him fall. He struck on his head and shoulders. Dr. Townsend found him partially conscious with terrible bruises on his head, face and sides.  There were indications that ribs were broken and that a lung was punctured. That instant death did not at once occur seems almost miraculous considering the distance of his fall. ( The only thing which prevented instant death was the fact that he  struck on a pile of coal cinders, which had not been packed down hard. Dr. Townsend saw only a very slight chance of his recovery, but upon his advice the patient was removed to the Canandaigua Memorial hospital.

Michael Hoban, a brother of James Hoban, was killed several years ago by falling from the same bridge.
