Some History - David Wagener - father of Penn Yan's Founders -  By GERALD M. DYKEMAN

PENN YAN - There is a marker beneath an Oak tree in the old section of Lakeview Cemetery that has inscribed on it, "David Wagener - died 1799. The first person to be buried in this cemetery."

David Wagener was not only the first person to be buried in what is now known as Lakeview Cemetery, but gave it to the village officials of Penn Yan to be used as a public burial ground. And it is still under the jurisdiction of the village government.

David Wagener was born near Worcester, Pa. and grew up in the Schwenkfelder faith of his parents. He later joined the Methodists when he married Rebecca Supplee, a sister of a Methodist minister. Wagener, however, was not satisfied with his religious faith and was about to join the Quakers when he met Jemima Wilkinson, the Public Universal Friend.

He became so impressed with the influence that Jemima Wilkinson seemed to have over her followers that he allowed her the use of his home each time she came to Worcester. And although it has been said by Yates County historians that he did not actually become one of her followers, Wagener sold his farming interests in Pennsylvania and came to this area in  1791, one year after Jemima Wilkinson had settled in the town of Torrey, near Dresden.

This was about the time there became a dispute over the Pre-emption line which also involved the land occupied by Jemima Wilkinson. When she decided to move to the area now known as Jerusalem, Wagener purchased the grist mill that had been built on the original site. He later sold it and in 1796 had the opportunity to purchase land that is now the site of Penn Yan. And he built the first grist mill which was located on the south side of the Keuka Lake Outlet at the present site of the Main St. bridge.

Wagener built his home in the area now occupied by Penn Yan and historians say that Jemima Wilkinson used it many times as a meeting place. At the time of the Indian Council between the Iroquois and the U.S. Government which was presided over by Col. Timothy Pickering in Canandaigua in 1794, Jemima Wilkinson traveled there accompanied by David Wagener and other followers.

He was the father of Abraham and  Melchoir who were instrumental in the founding of Penn Yan. Their influence carried a great deal of weight in those days and with Abraham, the more aggressive of the two men,  he later became known as the "Father of Penn Yan."

There are many buildings and sites that remind a person of the Wagener influence in Penn Yan. There is Wagener St., and a large house on Elm St. next to the Lakeview Cemetery that was once the possession of a member of the Wagener family. The Methodist Memorial Building on Main St. next to the Penn Yan United Methodist Church was once owned by R. Allen Wagener  who accomplished many things before his death. He was president of the Penn Yan Municipal Board.

There is the Wagener Mansion located on Bluff Point that overlooks the east and west branches of Keuka Lake. This large home was built in 1837 by Abraham Wagener and is considered to be one of the showplaces of Yates County. And finally there is the apple grown by the Wagener family and so aptly known as the Wagener apple.
