I have found in some cases, for this cemetery listing that the dates of death from the original cemetery list I used by the town, MAY BE the date of burial, rather than the date of death.  I did further research of newspapers, for correct dates of death.  If dates not in blue, then you should further check for the actual date of death, usually a variance of a few days.

This cemetery developed in 1870's from the farm of Clinton & Lucinda Rapalee. They had buried a young son at the top of the hill in 1862, but this plot is not part of the current cemetery and is on private property.

Later, many prior burials from Barrington & Starkey were moved to this cemetery and in 1908 a cemetery association took over the cemetery. In 1927, the village of Dundee assumed maintenance and ownership of this cemetery.  This is still an active cemetery.

DAR Plans Pilgrimage - PENN YAN  -  The Gu-Ya-No- Ga Chapter Daughters of American Revolution annual pilgrimage will be announced at the luncheon on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at 12:30 p.m. in the Methodist Memorial Building on Main St., Penn Yan.

A rummage sale to be in the Knapp House building on lower Main St., Aug. 25, will be in charge of Mrs. Fenton E. Bootes and Mrs. Roy Hatch.  Business conducted at the July 19 meeting included the showing of slides of the interior and exterior of Fraunces Tavern. Original paintings portraying George Washington and others were also shown.

The following information concerning the military status of Hope Carpenter, a veteran of the Revolutionary war, buried in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee, had been verified by Ga-Ya-No-Ga chapter.

He was born in New Jersey, March 16, 1759 and died May 4, 1840. Drafted into the service on Feb. 7, 1775 at Princeton, N.J. in Huntington New Jersey Militia, Carpenter served under Capt. Peter Gordon, of Long Island.

The records state that Carpenter took an active part in the Battle of Long Island.  He was among those who crossed the Delaware River with George Washington.  Carpenter was discharged from service in New Bruiswick, NJ.

Action is now being taken by the Yates County Chapter DAR to secure a suitable government marker to be placed on Carpenter's grave.  Arrangements are under the direction of Robert Carpenter of the Dundee Post American Legion.
