The Naples Record             Wed                      Dec 1, 1905

The last member of a family of nine children of William and Priscilla Polmanteer was laid at rest in the Italy-Naples county line cemetery last Saturday.  William H. Polmanteer was born in the town of Naples in 1820, and died November 23, 1905, in the house in which he was born. Four children were the fruits of his first, marriage, two of whom survive, Wallace and Sidney; by his second wife he had two sons, Arden and Grant, both of whom survive and are residents of this place. He was industrious and ingenious, and these two gifts were a blessing to him in his old age, and his relatives and friends are possessed of keepsakes fashioned by his own hands. He was possessed of a genial disposition, and one in a despondent mood would feel cheered when in his presence.

His first wife died of consumption. After a few years, he married for his second wife Mrs. Sophia Pardee, and she was a good mother to his children. His two daughters married and both died of consumption, leaving families. Mark Ackley, his eldest daughter's son, was born at his grandfather's and has always been the sunshine in the home, and carried out his grandfather's wishes to the letter, feeling that he owed him a debt of gratitude which he could never pay.

His children and grandchildren and a Mrs. Joseph Crants were very kind and administered to his every want. Although he had been gradually failing for a few years, the end came unexpectedly; he died sitting in his chair.

Besides his children he is survived by his last wife.   Rev. Henry Brown, pastor of the Ingleside Christian church officiated at the funeral.

The new iron and wire fence around the Italy-Naples County Line cemetery has been completed and is a beautiful piece of work, a credit to the community, to Ellis L. Phillips, of New York City, who had the fence put in, and to the laborers who did the work.

WILLIAM H. GILLETT - Funeral services for the late William H. Gillett were held from the home in South Main Street, Monday afternoon, Rev. D. Ratcliff,  pastor of the Baptist church, officiating assisted by the deceased 's dear friend Rev. Jas. H. Moss, of this village. Burial was in the family lot in the Italy-Naples County Line cemetery, by the side of five brothers and five sisters.

Mr. Gillette died last Friday evening at 7:10 o'clock, from heart disease, after a long lingering illness. He was born December 31, 1844, living his long life of 85 years in Italy and Naples, coming to Naples to live, 35 years ago.

Mr. Gillett was the son of Seymour W. and Maria Walters.  He married Miss Elizabeth K. Fisher of Italy Valley, April 19, 1863. They were married by Rev. Wm. Walker, pastor of the Italy-Naples church, at that time, at the TenEyck farm.  To this marriage were born two children, a daughter, Vada, (Mrs. Frank Stone) and a son, Frank H., the son died thirty years ago in Coldwell, Idaho.

Mr. Gillett is survived by his wife and daughter, Mrs. Frank Stone. For many years he was associated with his daughter in grocery business in the Carnot Lyon building.  He served on the Naples town board, several times.  He worked under different road commissioners on our town highways and was considered a valuable man in all branches of the work.

The funeral was largely attended as Mr. Gillette was well known by all, a good neighbor, and a friend.  It was the writer's good fortune to have known him long and well, and we only knew him to esteem him more highly as the years passed by.  We will miss his kindly smile and friendly greeting.

Oldest Resident of Yates County Dies at Age of 99 - Penn Yan, Sept. 14 -Joseph G. McConnell, 99, Yates County's oldest resident, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L.P. Jolley, on Tuesday afternoon following an illness of two weeks.

Mr. McConnell, or "Joe", as he was known to the majority of Yates County people would have celebrated his 100th birthday on January 18, next. He had been active and well up to within a few weeks ago when he was taken ill and failed to rally. His life time had been crowded with interesting events and he always took a keen interest in all events about him. He was an ardent reader and for the past few years spent most of his time reading.

In his early years he was a diligent and hard working son of the soil, his father having died when he was a young boy of 15 and the responsibility of the family naturally fell upon the shoulders of Joe,  who was the oldest of a family of seven.

Mr. McConnell was born January 18, 1834, in Steuben county, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander McConnell, early pioneers of Revolutionary stock. When Joe's parents moved to the town of Italy, Yates county, clearing the land for a farm. At that time there were but three frame dwellings in that vicinity and the home in which the McConnell's resided was known far and wide as the "block-house," constructed of squared logs, faced on the outside.

When Joseph was 15 years of age, his father died, and the young lad was left as the sole support of the family, consisting of his widowed mother, and seven younger children. How well he succeeded in taking his father's place, is yet told in the history of the township. The sturdy youth, with crude farming implements developed his acreage into a prosperous farm, rapidly paying off an indebtedness, and became known as one of the most

prosperous farmers of that section.

Plowing between the stumps, where the heavy forest had been removed. "Young Joe,'' as he was known in that section, assisted his father in the preparing of the land for its first crop of wheat, which was sowed the season that his father died. The boy cut the wheat, and prepared it for market the following season.

With the assistance of his brother, a lad of 14 years, "Joe", loaded the heavy sacks of grain onto a wagon, and made the long trip to Penn Yan, where the grain way loaded onto a canal boat, bound for Seneca Lake, through the old "Crooked Lake Canal."

Mr. McConnell often recalled that balance scales were used on this occasion, and that he received $1.85 per bushel for 80 bushels of wheat. Similar to present times, the farm produced wheat, barley, buckwheat, rye and other grains.

In those days, previous to the Civil War, there were but few horse teams in Yates "county, most of the work being done by oxen, of which Mr. McConnell was a noted trainer and breaker.  He often stated that he had probably broken to domestic uses hundreds of these beasts, and had at his home two heavy ox-yokes that he himself made.

Although he heard men older than himself tell of the wolves that inhabited the woods, Mr. McConnell said that he never saw but one, but recalled that the woods were full of smaller game, foxes and coons were abundant and there were hundreds of wild cats.

In April, 1860, Mr. McConnell married Miss Barbara Kennedy, an emigrant from Scotland, who has been dead a number of years. By their marriage they had five children, three of whom are still living, James K. McConnell of Penn Yan; Alexander McConnell, of Prattsburg. and a daughter Mrs. L. P. Jolley, of Penn Yan with whom the aged man made his home. There are now living four generations on both sides of the family.

Mr. McConnell had the first mowing machine in the town of  Italy, and also was the owner of the first reaper and binder as well as other newer improvements.  He often stated that the town of Italy has produced many boys who became preachers and bankers of note.

Mr. McConnell was the oldest member of the First Presbyterian church in this village and the pastor, Rev. Walter A. Henricks, will conduct the funeral services. There will be a prayer service at the home of Mrs. L. P. Jolley, 308 Clinton street, at 1 p. m. on Friday and a service will be held at 2:30 p. m. In the Italy-Naples County Line church. Burial will be made in the County Line cemetery near the church.

MRS. SHERMAN F. EDSON Answers the Final Roll Call - Mrs. Ida Eliza Shattuck Edson was the daughter of Harvey Scott and Julia Belinda Shattuck, who long since have passed on.

She was born at North Cohocton, New York, February 29, 1864 and died March 18, 1937 at her home in West Italy, with the members of her family by her bedside.

She attended the North Cohocton and Atlanta High School from which she was graduated in 1882. For several years after completing her education, she taught school in various districts in the vicinity, until her marriage to Mr. Edson, September 26, 1885. They were blessed with one daughter, Alice May, Born September 17, 1888 to gladden and comfort their lives. For fifteen years Alice did all that; then God took her to Himself on April 20, 1904.

After a short period of time, she and her husband, feeling their loss so keenly, took little Edith Newton, to live with them and she proved indeed a source of much comfort. On April 5, 1911, Edith married Mr. Willis Buck of Naples.

Mrs. Edson is survived by her husband; one brother, Allen D. Shattuck, of Atlanta; a cousin, Frank Bardeen, who has made his home with them for the past forty years; two nieces, Ruth M. Shattuck and Mrs. Rosamond Krueger. A sister, Elizabeth B. Gillett; a half brother, Chauncey Shattuck; and a half sister, Mrs. Jennie K. Robinson, have pre-deceased her.

She was intensely interested in all civic and national affairs, and well informed on current issues of the day. Up to the time of failing sight her magazines and newspapers were daily companions but not to the neglect of her household duties. A lover of the great out of doors and Nature in its various forms, she spent many pleasant hours working about the lawn and garden.

A daily habit, formed in early years and taken probably from her father, was the keeping of a diary. This has proven valuable in instances when some question of importance has arisen.  Mrs. Edson was of an independent disposition preferring to work out her own problems by individual effort rather than calling on her friends. This was a characteristic of hers and was recognized and respected by her acquaintances.

She was a loyal member of the Naples Methodist Episcopal Church, a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class and an officer on the official Church Board.

She also belonged at one time to the Naples Grange and was always interested in their various activities.  She was enrolled as one of the older members of the NCA Reunion Association and until failing health forbade, was usually present at their gatherings.  All these societies will miss her wise counsel and helpfulness.

Funeral services were held from the home Sunday, March 21st at 2:00 p. m., Pastor E. J. Burton officiating. She was laid to rest in Italy County Line Cemetery by the side of her daughter,  Alice.  "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away: blessed be the name of the Lord."

Collins Anable, 71, died Monday, Oct. 10, 1955, after a long illness. He was born in the town of Italy on March 21, 1884, and always lived in this vicinity.   He leaves two brothers, Edward Anable of Italy and William, of Naples, R.D.

Services will be held at 2 pm Thursday from the Emory funeral home in Naples, conducted by Rev. Birger Halvorsen, of the Naples Methodist Church.  Burial will be made in Italy-Naples County Line Cemetery.

The death of Mrs. Mary Lewis occurred early Sunday morning. Jan. 11, at her late home at County Line, aged 60.  The funeral services were held in the M. E. church, of which she was a faithful worker and consistent member for over 30 years. Besides her husband, Samuel Lewis, she is survived by one son, Charles Lewis of this place, and three brothers, Seward, Charles and George Scriver.

Rev. Wells preached a fine discourse very appropriate to the occasion. The choir gave two selections which were beautifully rendered, after which the remains were taken to the County Line cemetery.

This community and the church will miss a valuable member of their society, and the family also lose a kind mother and faithful wife. The surviving husband has the sympathy of a large circle of relatives and friends.
