1860 Fort Covington, Franklin County, NY Census

Introduction

Transcribed and submitted by John Austin
This is the 1860 census for Ft. Covington, Franklin Co. NY. It was compiled in the summer of 1860 by Samuel Payne of Ft. Covington, who also did the censuses for several other towns. In general his writing is easy to read, but his spelling of names, even very common names, was erratic and tended to be phonetic. This causes more of a problem than it might in some other towns, because Ft. Covington had a large proportion of French speaking Canadian immigrants. Mr. Payne rarely spelled their last names in a manner that would be recognizable today, and as a result, researchers must be forewarned that they should consider almost any similar sounding spelling when looking for a particular family, especially if they were French Canadian in origin.
Mr Payne also counted several families or individuals twice. The following families were written two times in the census, and the numbers in front of their names indicate which house numbers they were in the originals
22 and 152 Patrick Mannix and family
22 and 152 Ed Sweeney
316 and 440 William Hart and family
406 and 502 Alexander Hollenbeck and family
407 and 503 Louis LeClair and family
418 and 493 George Paddock and family
418 and 493 Elizabeth McQueen
