This is the 1860 census of Brandon, in Franklin Co. NY. It was begun by Warren Ives of Dickinson, and completed by Luther Burnham after Ives died in October 1860. Warren Ives had very poor handwriting and researchers will notice a large number of question marks beside names that were (in some cases) impossible even to guess at. It is suggested that researchers use this list as a guide, but compare the original whenever doubt arises. Direct descendants of a family may easily recognize names that would be considered unfamiliar or unusual today.Some of the family names that could only guessed at include:
409 ManhouseMany of the given names were also guessed at, but they are less likely to cause confusion than are misspelled surnames. Researchers will often have second options for finding out the correct given name (eg cemeteries, wills, and other censuses) as long as the surname was correct.

595 VawenderGenealogists will be pleased with one aspect of this census and that is the fact that for many of the Irish immigrants, Warren Ives listed the county in Ireland from which they came.
This census is unusual in another way, and that is the high number of twins recorded. With only 795 people counted, there were 7 sets of twins.
