This is the 1860 census of Bombay NY. The large number of French names are sure to cause confusion to researchers using this census because they were spelled phonetically sometimes and sometimes just by whim. Genealogists should consult the original in any case where they suspect that a name has been mis-spelled eiither by me or the census taker. The name "Pyrrha" may have been "Pyrsha". House numbers in several cases (eg from 23-27) were off by one or more with no explanation as to why. The name "Codet" may have been "Cadet" or "Culet". Joseph Bero's wife is listed 2 doors down, from him, but it may have been a mistake. Mrs. Bero is listed in the midst of the Lamping children, so it may have been an error on the part of the census taker and not a family which had split up. Luther Burnham of Moira was the census taker and his capital "L" was almost the same as his capital "S", so some names may be completely wrong. One example is that "Souvain" may have been "Louvain". In other cases, his capital "B" is the same as his capital "R", so "Risio" may be "Bisio" etc. The name Rabideau is spelled several different ways today in Franklin Co. and the spelling here was chosen because it appeared to be the most common. However, any of the other spellings may be correct. It is interesting to note that Catherine Fulton was born in New Zealand. Two women who had married Mohawks were listed, but their husbands were not counted.
