Joseph Safford, mariner, was living in 1818 at 64 Pump Street with Henry Purdy, whose residence had been there for several years preceding. He married Ann or Nancy Purdy, bron in 1795, a daughter of Henry Purdy, and died in 1829 or 1830, his widow appearing in the directory of 1830, at 43 Chapel Street. The widow Saffordsoon married again, her second husband being Henry T. Gray, a shipping merchant of New York City, who died in 1852. She had several children by her first husband and possibly also by her second husband.

May 7, 1869, to Henrietta F. Safford, of Brooklyn, N. Y., on the estate of her deceased husband, John J. Safford, of Orange, N. J., who left an estate in New York.
